Zao Horseback Riding Tour This is real backcountry riding through Japan's Tohoku — the same mountains that turn cherry-blossom pink in spring, emerald green in summer, blazing amber in autumn, and ghost-white in winter. Your riding companion is the Dosanko, a rare and hardy Japanese breed known for its calm temperament and sure footing on mountain trails. Whether you've never sat in a saddle or you ride regularly back home, the program is shaped around you. After the trail, soak in a natural hot spring ryokan, eat a proper Japanese dinner, and wake up to do it all again — longer ride, deeper into the forest. A typical 1 night · 2 days itinerary Day 1 Arrive at Shiraishi-Zao Station (Shinkansen from Tokyo — we'll pick you up). Get acquainted with your horse, settle into the western saddle with a quick lesson, then head out for a cross-country ride through the Kurumi trails as the mountains shift into evening light. Dinner and hot springs at a traditional ryokan. Sleep well — you'll need it. Day 2 Morning warmup and grooming, then back on the trail for a full horseback ride. Depending on the weather, we will head out to different locations and tailor the experience with the season's best view. Lunch at your leisure, then a relaxed farewell before heading back to Tokyo — tired in the best way. Want to ride more? Extensions and custom programs are available.
