Carrie, trilingual horse riding guide in Japan, with a horse on the beach

Meet Carrie

Hi, I'm Carrie — your guide, interpreter, and fellow horse lover.

I've lived in Japan for over a decade, and horses have been part of my life for just as long. I'm a native Chinese speaker, fluent in English and Japanese, and after years in the corporate world I made the leap — left my desk job and went to work at a horse trekking farm in Kanagawa.

That's where I saw the gap up close. Foreign visitors would arrive excited, only to find staff who couldn't communicate with them, experiences designed purely for Japanese speakers, and no one to bridge the difference. I knew I could fix that.

So I started Horseback in Japan — a one-person operation built around one idea: that anyone, regardless of language or riding experience, should be able to get on a horse and explore Japan the way locals do.

I personally vet every facility I work with. I know the horses, I know the trails(— see the full list of our riding services), and I handle all communication with farms, ryokans, and local partners before and during your trip. For full tour packages including accommodation and transport, I work in partnership with a licensed travel agency in Japan — so your booking is fully covered. You just show up.

Whether you're here for a half-day beach ride or a multi-day mountain retreat, I'll make sure it's the kind of experience you'll still be talking about when you get home.

Curious about Japan's horse culture? I write about it in the blog— including native breeds, Yabusame, and English-friendly riding clubs

Let's ride.

Beyond horseback riding

I also offer private sightseeing and interpretation services in Kanagawa — covering Miura, Yokosuka, Kamakura, Zushi, Hayama and surrounding areas. If you're planning a trip to the region and want a local guide who speaks your language, feel free to reach out.
